Industrial Designers, listen up!
Hello. I know some of you are paying attention, so I thought I'd share this article with you. It was written by - none other than - my new favorite writer of all things Chinese: Peter Hessler. Find it here: http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/050926fa_fact2
If that doesn't work, go to the New Yorker's Web site and do a search on Hessler. Two articles by him will come up. Both are excellent reads but I highly suggest the one titled, "Car Town" to anyone interested in a. Industrial Design, b. Car design/manufacturing specifically, c. Car/Product manufacturing in China, d. the "Wild West" of China's manufacturing techniques, e. something by Hessler that is significantly shorter than one of his two books...
I found the article fascinating even as someone who has put my ID cap away for the time being, and even felt a little bit excited by the notion of working for/with one of these budding upstart companies...the thrill alone of "borrowing" a competitor's idea and getting it to market a moment earlier and for a fraction of the cost makes me weak in the knees (not withstanding my little accident from the other day). The most interesting part to me, though, is that it simply cannot last. And what happens THEN?
Read the article! And, if some of you are interested in getting that Bamboozle company going again...let's talk! I know where to get the bamboo!!!
